There was no candy cane shortage at our house this year. Our news was predicting a candy cane crisis of epic proportions this year as one major Christmas Confection maker was taken over by Hershey. While mall Santa’s and major retail chains were calling foul, I bought up candy canes early to make sure we had an ample supply. It was pretty silly actually. So now, here we are in mid-February and I still have candy canes. I am really happy about that, because there is some pretty cool things you can do with left over candy canes. One of my favorite things to do with leftover candy canes is to make fairy dust!
Candy cane dust is phenomenal on hot chocolate, in coffee and tea, on ice cream, in cookies, in brownies, and on top of homemade marshmallows. Seriously fantastic. The only limit is your imagination and right now, mine is going wild with the possibilities!
How To Make Candy Cane Dust
Just toss some unwrapped and broken up candy canes in a blender and pulverize them until you get them to the size and consistency that you like.
If you don’t have a blender, just put the broken up pieces into a freezer bag and seal it. Put a towel on your kitchen counter, then the bag of candy cane pieces, then cover with another towel. Smash the candy canes with a heavy pan or a rolling pin until you get them to the size you want.
Store your magical candy cane dust in an airtight container. Moisture is not your friend here so make sure your container is airtight. If for some reason moisture gets in and your beautiful dust hardens into a wonderful sweet ball of fun, just pulverize it again. Go ahead, smack it around. Put it on everything to add deliciousness!
